Elaine "Pookie"'s Story

PRESENT ENDEAVORS: FLW TOURNAMENT TRAIL: Because I love fishing a great fishery, I've moved to Lake Fork, TX from now until winter sets in...I can fish everyday on a lake that a lot of people would like to fish there once in a life time - I'm blessed! I'm off on a new adventure! Of, course, those that know me - know it has something to do with bass fishing.... I received a phone call from Bill, the Tournament Director with the FLW last Wednesday (07/11/13). Bill called to ask, if I would be willing to work the FLW Tournament Trail; and the upcoming tournament – the "2013 Forrest Wood Cup," Tournament here on the Red River, Shreveport, La. Expo: Aug. 16-18. He needs someone to oversee the weigh-in's and someone that knows the behind the scene responsibilities. There are an enormous amount of cables and wires, multiple aerated tanks for the Anglers to use to keep their fish alive or they are penalized. The Anglers may they have weight deducted from their overall weight during the weigh-in if they have fish dead in the live well. There are runners to help with the fish at most tournaments. I am really excited to have the chance to work with the FLW! I'll be meeting a new crew and making new friends. The FLW Tournaments are similar to BASS/BASSMASTER Open and Elite tournaments. If you work hard enough and have enough and you have the points to qualify, you can move up to fish the 2014 BASSMASTER Classic. PRESENT ENDEAVORS: I am still working BASSMASTER Tournaments when I have been able to this summer. Tournaments are something that I will never give up, Although, many of the tournaments require driving cross country. My body is not ready for long road trips quite yet. I hope to be at maximum speed next year. After having had 3 surgeries last year - the hardest one was my 7th Lumbar surgery with 2 levels fused with bone plugs, reinforcing the spine with titanium rods and screws. That was in May but I had, had to have knee surgery before then in March. The third was in August and it was heart related. It is taken me awhile to get back on my feet - so I have not worked as many BASS events this year. However, I did work an Elite here on the Red River and I am scheduled to work another Elite in August. I really enjoyed my first tournament back on the tournament trail this past Spring here on the Red River. Of course, I love the BASSMASTER CLASSICS with all its pomp nad circumstance but its really the intensity among the best of the best Anglers. I was able work the BASSMASTER CLASSIC but instead of working with my weigh-in team, because they were short the number of Marshals needed. So, I worked as a Marshal to help out in an area that is hard to fill in Feb, when its cold or cold and raining as it was this year and in years past. As a Marshal, you ride with one of the Anglers for the full day. You draw a different Angler everyday. A Marshal is there to record all fish caught that meets the BASSs Rules for length. You record any fish and approxlmate weight before they go in the livewell. Everything recorded is entered in to a hand held device, called a BASS-TRAC and any bass that may be culled after the Angler has his limit of 5 bass. If he catches a fish that weighs more than one of the fish already in the livewell - he is allowed to release that bass for the larger bass. Some Anglers have a camera boat following them as they fish....in that case you can get in the camera boat so that the camera man can be in the boat with the Angler. The rule is - the camera boat has to stay right by the Anglers boat because as a Marshal, you have to witness every fish caught and culled. It was a great experience and all of the Anglers were great but I will not do it ever again. You leave the launch at 7:00am with the Angler and you are out on the water with them until its time for their wave or check-in time...starting at 3:00pm. I really enjoyed spending the day with the professional Anglers - except that I had to watch him catch bass and I couldn't wet a hook. For me - that is a difficult thing to do.I like the guys that I work with on the weigh-in team from BASS/ESPN and I would much rather work with the Anglers coming in, in the afternoons. for the weigh-ins. I can fish all day - after the 7:00am launch and fish until around 2:00pm. At 2 pm I head in to play, I mean to work....its more like going to have the best time with a bunch of your friends.. Because of my health issues I decided to tender my letter deeming me semi-retired from the Board of BASS LIFE until I felt I could give 100 per cent to the organization. I had been a Member of the Board of Directors of an non-profit organization - BASS LIFE ASSOCIATES, INC. I have been a member of BASS LIFE for 7 years. We are DEDICATED TO THE FISHERIES OF THE ARK-LA-TEX. We hold one big fundraiser every April at the Shreveport Convention Center. All of the funds that we raise each year, goes right back into the local fishing community. Several of our projects - we sponsor children's fishing tournaments, where we provide the fishing equipment and bait. We try to make sure that each child gets a trophy. BASS LIFE sponsors a Wildlife and Aquatics Education Program for all 5th graders for any of our schools that want to enroll in 2 parishes, Caddo and Bossier Parishes. Every year we fund the City of Shreveport by sponsoring the Fish Hatchery on Cross Lake. I personally work with the biologist at the Hatchery after our fundraising event and Sportsman's Dinner. When the ponds are drawn down at the Hatchery, I haul those Florida Black Bass Fingerlings in our BASS LIFE aerated double tank trailer and release them from a boat launch site. Wildliffe and Fisheries decides where the fingerlings are to be released. The fingerlings that I haul for release or usually sited for release to 1 of 2 pools on the Red River and several of our area lakes. Caddo Lake, Cross Lake, Black Bayou Lake...etc. We would love to make fishing a family sport and reach as many children, those that would otherwise never have had a chance to go fishing. I am also a Member of the Toledo Bend Lake Association. .I have not been able to bass fish as often as I would have liked.. I was barred from riding in a boat by my neuro-surgeon until my bone plugs had fused. This year we had the early rains that really helped with the water levels in the river and lakes after last years lack of rain. We will actually have water to safely fish in this summer...especially on Toledo Bend.. I will continue to work with BASS/ESPN on the BASSMASTER Classic and Elite Series Tournament Trail until they kick me out. Working with my weigh-team is where I am planning to stay . Dave Mercer and Tripp Wheldon are on the BASS on the stage for every weigh-in and Tommy Sanders and Mark Zona are in the BASSMASTER Commentators booth during all of the weigh-ins. I work behind the scenes with the tournament director and the Anglers. I am working at the tanks as the Anglers are waiting...moving from tank to tank with their bags - keeping their fish aerated, just waiting until it's their turn to take the stage. Each Angler has to sign for their weigh slips each day. Sometimes I work at the weigh slip machine and other times...I am making sure that the fish stay alive until their release. There are multiple aerated tanks that the fish must remain in until they are taken by a runner to the Catch and Release Barges. If an Angler has a fish die from lack of aeration in his livewell - he's pentalized and losing weight from his daily weigh-in total. That cost Gerald Swindle 250,000 dollars when he fished at Toledo Bend. G-man was in first place ut had a fish die - he had 2 ozs taking from his final weigh-in total. Gerald is on the "Hot Seat" and the final angler was up on the stage and his catch was 1oz over Swindles. G took 2nd place and would have won by 1 oz if that one fish had not croaked. Alton Jones won the Battle on The Bayou. We have runners at most tournament locations and at other locations - we have tanks or chutes on the stage where Tripp can place the bass until they can be loaded on to the barge for release. Each Angler is given a weigh bag to put their bass in when they come. All fish to be used for the weigh-in - must be taken from their livewells but not before they come in for the weigh-in. The limit per weigh-in is 5 bass. The only fish that can be removed from the liv ewell beforehand - is when an Angler is culling. Weigh bags are counted and all of them must be accounted for between waves. There are waves where so many Anglers leave out or return in 15 minute intervals - depending on their placement. The Angler with the highest weight class each day, leaves out first, 2nd placement - 2nd and so on... There are 99 Anglers on the roster and they begin to cut the roster. By the 4th day, the final 12 Anglers fish. The winner of the BASSMASTER Classic receives a check for 500,000 dollars and the Elite Series winner gets a check for 250,000 dollars. MY THOUGHTS ON HAVING 2 GRADUATION CLASSES: I'm worki...Expand for more
ng to plan a 40th Class of 73' Reunion. I can't believe its been it's been 40 years since I walked across the stage on the football field to receive my diploma on May 24, 1973. It was the last time that I walked the Mall and lockers at GOHS....but a part of my heart will remain there - even after I'm gone...GOHS LIVES ON through all of us that graced those halls. I was with the Class of 73' and they still are my class but I took the option to take 7 hours and I qualified to graduate with the Class of 72'. I love all of my GOHS Class of 72' and they will always have a part of my heart. Most of my friends were 72'ers but I had some great friends with the 73'ers as well. I have only missed one of 72's Reunions in the first 35 years. We have had a reunion every 5 yrs and are getting ready to celebrate 72's 40th Class Reunion I did however, go back and walk with the Class of 73' in May1973, just walk with my friends that I had originally started with and to receive my fake.diploma.The Class of 73' however is not as a close class and has only had 3 reunions. One at 10 years, 20 years and one at 25 years. The Class of 72' had invited multiple years to their 25th at the Atrium and since so many of 73' attended - most of us saw no point in having a 25 year reunion for the Class of 73'. MY BIO AFTER GRADUATION: I went to work after graduation at Woman's Hospital. I married and moved in 1974 to Longview, TX - shortly afterwards we moved then to Henderson, TX to live on Lake Cherokee . My husband's job transferred him back to LA but to the most god forsaken town possible - DeRidder! We eventually returned to Baton Rouge and I worked for an Oral Surgeon. I had 2 children. Later, I went to work for Baton Rouge Physical Therapy and I was contracted out to Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary. Several years later I divorced and I went to work out of Local 53 as a insulator - working in Convent on the new B. F. Goodrich Plant & at the EXXON Refinery. I hated the insulation/construction area. I enrolled at Baton Rouge Vo-Tech and took Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. I completed the course through B. R. Vo-Tech but decided that wasn't what I really wanted to do either. With the help of a high school friend -I landed a job with a freight company, driving a truck. It was by far the job that was best suited for me. On the road, outside of an office and no boss breathing down my neck. I remarried and we raised our children in the small community of Watson/Denham Springs. Our children have since graduated from LSU and now have families of their own. We have 4 grandchildren, 2 in south LA and 2 in Dallas. One job completed! We moved to Shreveport in 2001 with my husband's job and though it's not S LA - it's home now! I love Shreveport/Bossier City.... I helped care for my Mother who had had Alzheimer's for over 12 years - until her death in 2005. We then moved my 85 year old Dad up to Shreveport to live with us until his death this past April 2009. So as you can see.....I decided it was time to move on with my life. I'm retired & I've lived in Shreveport for 9 years and I spend my days bass fishing or planning where I'm going to fish next. I have more rivers and lakes within 2 hours than I can ever fish. I have LA, TX, AR & OK to choose from - and that's just for starters. I'm a BASS LIFE Associates, Inc. Board Member, a member of the Toledo Bend Lake Association, a member of the Shreveport Regional Sports Authority, I've worked with the Shreveport/Bossier City Convention & Tourism Ctr. during the Dick's Sporting Goods Sports EXPO, worked alongside B.A.S.S./ ESPN at the 2009 BASSMASTER CLASSIC, the 2009 BASSMASTER CENTRAL ELITE OPEN at Toldeo Bend, the 2009 WOMEN'S BASSMASTER TOURNAMENT and the WOMEN'S ANGLER OF THE YEAR. In 2010, I worked the BASSMASTER 2010 CENTRAL OPEN on the RED RIVER. This year, 2011 - I worked with my wonderful friends from B.A.S.S./ESPN at the BASSMASTER ELITE "TROKAR BATTLE ON THE BAYOU" on Toledo Bend. We are in preparation for the upcoming "1st Annual Big Bass Extravaganza" on the Red River, May 7 & 8, 2011. After I'm finished with the 2011 GOHS ALUMNI REUNION, I'll come back to Shreveport and begin to get to work on the 2012 BASSMASTER CLASSIC in February. As you can tell - I'm enjoying life to the fullest........ Q & A's: I hope that all of my friends will remember me as being friendly, fun to be with and a little rebellious. The craziest thing I ever did during high school was - drink Jack Daniels & coke while smoking a cigar, walking down the mall on a pep rally morning I've lived in Longview & Henderson, TX, DeRidder, Clio, Baker, Watson, Haugton, Shreveport/ Bossier City, LA My biggest sports obsession is to watch LSU Football and my greatest sports obsession to participate in is bass fishing I had always wanted to be a truck driver when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a crazy idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. I drove a freight truck and was one of the first female freight haulers out of Baton Rouge. The best way for me to blow off steam -is to take my boat out on the river or lake and bass fish or just drift with the current. It's the calmness of being on the water. My hero was my Dad. He taught me to love the outdoors, to love fishing, to hunt, trap, change the oil and a tire on my car. He taught me to have confidence in myself, to be independent and to never back down from a challenge. He instilled in me that gender had nothing to do with being able to take care of myself. He wanted me to never be fearful of trying something new and learning from my mistakes. To be truly happy - I'd be living in Florida on the water as a fishing guide with a brand new rigged out Nitro Z-9 with a 250hp Mercury Optimax with duel Power-Poles, living with my cats and a lot of insurance for hurricane damage. What happened to my first crush? I must not have been real impressed with whoever he was because I don't even remember who he was. Sorry to you whoever you are if you read this! I know girls are suppose to remember monumental moments in their lives - well, I can't tell who my first kiss was either! My best friend would tell you - I'm loyal to the death and I also love to have fun, laugh and dance. People who don't know me very well would probably describe me as a little nutty. My style of dress (clothing) is up scale from what I wore 10 -20 years ago. I like to wear up to date fashions. I'm the same weight that I was in high school - so I can wear the newer styles. When I'm not out fishing, I like to dress well if I'm going out. If I'm staying home - a pair of jeans or shorts and a tee shirt is all I need. The downside to that is I have expensive taste and I love to buy shoes. The weirdest job I ever had...altering men's pants and I can't sew. If I got one do-over, what would I do differently? Nothing This is how my life was supposed to go and this is where I am supposed to be at this time in my life...I still have more life to experience and I plan to enjoy every bit of it. "I'm going to dance like hell until the music stops". I plan to die on the dance floor dancing or have a heart attack and fall overboard with the fishes. In 10 years I hope to be alive and in good health. I'm going to get there by doing just what I'm doing and have done all of my life...fly by the seat of my pants. What surprises everyone at my high school class reunion about me? That I haven't changed much...just gracefully matured ______________________________________________________________________________ "WHAT IS THE # 1 QUESTION I'VE BEEN ASKED???" "WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND MY NICKNAME, "POOKIE". WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM OR WHO GAVE ME THE NICKNAME "POOKIE"? In 1970-71, I was dating a 69'GOHS alum that was a twin. He found my name ELAINE a difficult name to remember, for some reason. Which believe it or not, has been a problem all of my life! I've been called Alane, Irene, Ellen, Eillen....you get the point. Anyway, "The Sterile Cuckoo" was a movie that was playing at the Robert E Lee Theater on Plank Road next to Shoe Town and K & B Drugstore. It was there that he went to see "The Sterile Cuckoo" and in the movie Liza Minnelli's characters name was "Pookie". Now this guy, my boyfriend at the time and his brother had unique nicknames also....Big Bit and Little Bit (some of you will know them)...they decided that "Pookie" was a unique enough name that he could remember.(Well, thank you very much! We had only been dating for months....) Long story short - the nickname stuck. Only my closest friends called me "Pookie" and still do. We were an eclectic group consisting of high school kids from Baker, Redemptorist, Central and GOHS. Some of you will remember when we were thrown together or blended in today's terms - during the redistricting of the school zone lines in 1971-72. When I make a trip home to Baton Rouge for a visit and I hear someone call out the name "Pookie", I know without a doubt -it's a blast from the past. _______________________________________
